I agree Jamorama is an excellent guitar lesson ebook. It is not very expensive, you can learn at your own pace from the comfort of you own home. I purchased it and I thought it was great, it has everything for you to learn how to play guitar.

You are absolutely right to suggest memorizing the shapes of the modes. Thinking about the formula for a particular mode, at least me, is a process that uses the logical part of the brain and so is slow and not really musical in nature. Once the modes shapes are memorized the brain seems free to think about the sound of the music. Nice article.

Commitment to teaching and legitimacy are huge factors in finding a qualified Guitar Teacher. I'm amazed at the number of Guitar Lesson Signs I drive by on a daily basis. I love to call and inquire about their program and usually find they lack one. Serious guitar teaching must be done by those committed to the teaching profession, and not as a way to get cash in between gigs. Long live the Real Guitar Teachers.

I've seen more smoke from student's brains discussing modes than any other topic. You bring up some valid points and getting students to visualize what they're hearing is key.

I've been playing guitar for a little over a week now. I bought my first guitar today. A Takomine D Series Dragon Acoustic. It's fantastic. I go to www.justinguitar.com . I find it's a great website for people wanting to learn. All online tutorial and all that. When I have a song I want to learn, and have no idea what the strumming sequences are... I learn form a girl I found on youtube that takes requests for songs. She's great. She goes through it all for you. I can't afford guitar lessons. I was always worried that I'd have to go to them to learn how to play the guitar properly, and my partner... is a piano player and still thinks I should go and get taught by someone. I read tabs, but I can read music fairly well. Tabs puts it there straight away for you, so I find it easier. Since I've been only learning for a week, I assume with practice... my confidence will grow with the chords. Then I will hopefully be able to see a tab, get a feel for the tune... and strum away at ease. Learning guitar has been a wonderful experience so far, and now that I've got my own guitar... I can't wait for the road ahead to learning Rhythm guitar :)

Thanks for the excellent post! It's true. Each mode has it's own personality and has to be thought of and heard as a set of notes and intervals in it's own right independent of the major diatonic scale it is related to. In my guitar lessons, I've had students that actually graduated from music school who never got this. They say "I learned about modes but have no idea how I'm supposed to actually USE this stuff"! Once again we see that EAR TRAINING is key and your post addresses this point very nicely.

I like to teach the 5 CAGED shapes as well. Then when you start to target chord tones it's a bit easier to connect them with non-chord tones from the CAGED shape. I also like to visualize small triads and how the melodic idea weaves around the basic chord shape.

For wider intervallic playing covering larger rangers, you can start to play over 2 adjacent shapes.

Hi.. thanks for sharing your tips on how to find the ideal guitar instructor. I definitely agree on all the tips mentioned however he should be reachable at specific times. If indeed there could be a guitar player who meets the criteria mentioned above, he must be a really busy fella to get a hold of. We realize that, there are times when a student, while in practice, finds himself in a dead end and may have questions that need to get answered quickly, that is why we have online chat support for students, with a real live guitar instructor on the other end.
